The rule

β€œIf you do not prepare accounts, you will need to record your income and expenses for each tax year (6 April to 5 April).”

  2. HMRC works out tax based on the tax year.

    What GOV.UK says

β€œThis is because HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) works out tax based on the tax year.”

  3. If your business accounting year ends on or between 31 March and 4 April, you can treat your accounting year as if it ends on 5 April, and report those profits without apportioning for the 5 days after 31 March.
